Elgin partners with school districts so 90% of third graders will read at or above grade level*.
Grade K-3 Goals:
- Accelerate the rate of reading growth for K-3rd grade
- Alter the reading process in six years to sustainable levels without Elgin support
- Encourage schools to extend the program to grades 4-12
Impact:
- Year One (2010-11): 6,900 total students, 35 schools, 6 school districts
- Year Two (2011-12): 1,606 new students, 10 schools, 2 new school districts added; 8,506 total students
- Year Three (2012-13): 735 new students, 1 new school district added; 9,241 total students
Key Components:
- Public adoption of the 90% reading goal
- Use of “Imagine It!” curriculum for core reading program and “Reading Mastery” for additional intervention
- Increase reading instruction time to 120-minute reading blocks for all students; add additional 60-minute reading blocks for students who require additional instruction
- Use of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) to assess progress and guide instruction
- Promote pre-K literacy and work to reduce summer loss for elementary students
- Ongoing coaching support for teachers, principals, superintendents, and school boards
